United in Impact: Navigating Adventures with NPS RTCA and Latino Projects

Hey everyone,

Rebecca here, and I'm thrilled to reconnect with you for another glimpse into my journey as the Communications and Graphics Fellow. These past couple of months have been a whirlwind of growth and learning, particularly with my involvement in the selection process for NPS RTCA projects. Today, I'm excited to share some additional insights and experiences, including my eagerness to dive into a Latino and Hispanic community project.

As I've delved deeper into my role with NPS RTCA, I've had the privilege of learning about the technical support they provide to communities across the Midwest in the past. From assisting with park revitalization efforts to promoting environmental education programs, NPS RTCA plays a vital role in empowering communities and fostering positive change. It's been incredibly rewarding to be part of this process and to see the tangible impact of these projects on the ground.

In addition to my work with NPS RTCA, I'm excited to share that I'll be further involved in a Latino and Hispanic community project in the coming months. This opportunity to engage directly with Latino and Hispanic communities aligns perfectly with my personal and professional interests, and I'm eager to explore how I can contribute to this important initiative.

Reflecting on the journey so far, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences and opportunities that have come my way. From crafting signage packages to assisting with project selection, each day brings new challenges and learning opportunities. And through it all, I've been inspired by the passion and dedication of the individuals and organizations I've had the privilege to work with.

But perhaps one of the most enriching aspects of my fellowship experience has been the pleasure of working alongside other fellows as part of a cohesive team. Despite the geographical distances that separate us, we've come together as a unit, supporting and uplifting one another every step of the way. Whether it's sharing ideas, providing feedback, or simply lending a listening ear, the camaraderie among fellow interns and fellows has been nothing short of inspiring.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of our respective roles, I find comfort in knowing that I'm not alone in this journey. Together, we're stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to overcome any challenges that may come our way. And as we collaborate towards common goals and aspirations, I'm reminded of the power of unity and the importance of community in driving positive change.

Looking ahead, I'm excited to see where this journey takes us as a team. From supporting NPS RTCA projects to engaging with Latino and Hispanic communities, there's boundless potential for growth, learning, and impact. And through it all, I'm grateful to be part of such an incredible team, united in our shared mission to make a difference in the world.

Thank you for joining me on this adventure. I can't wait to share more with you in the days and weeks to come.

Until next time,

Rebecca :)

Reflecting on Six Months: A Journey as the Communications and Graphics Fellow

Hello, dear readers!

It's Rebecca here, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to my third blog post. It's hard to believe that it's already been six months since I embarked on this exciting journey as the Communications and Graphics Fellow. Time truly flies when you're having fun and making a difference!

Reflecting on my journey as the Communications and Graphics Fellow over the past six months, I'm struck by how quickly time has flown by. It feels like just yesterday that I embarked on this adventure, starting with my exploration of Channel Islands National Park. This breathtaking beach park set the stage for my initial steps into this exciting role.

As I ventured into Channel Islands National Park, it wasn't merely a leisurely escape; it served as a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the importance of seizing each moment. Walking along the sandy shores, soaking in the coastal beauty, I couldn't help but marvel at how swiftly the months were slipping through my fingers. It was a humbling experience, grounding me in the present while igniting a sense of urgency to make the most of every opportunity that came my way. This quick picture I took does not showcase the beautiful beach in all its glory. Hope you can imagine a little through this picture!

One of the standout moments of the past six months has been the creation of the wayfinding document for our esteemed partner. Crafting this project signage package was more than just a task; it was a labor of love aimed at streamlining processes and providing clarity amidst the complexity of our work. As a remote worker stationed in sunny California, far from my team in the Midwest, the project offered me the chance to showcase my graphic design skills while fostering a sense of connection and collaboration across geographical boundaries.

Amidst the flurry of NPS RTCA technical support applications flooding in, organizing and tracking incoming projects became my exhilarating responsibility. Each new submission represented a unique opportunity to positively impact communities across the Midwest, from bustling urban centers to tranquil rural landscapes. It was a privilege to play a role in facilitating these initiatives, knowing that each project had the potential to enrich lives and strengthen the fabric of our society.

Now, as I look ahead to the coming months, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement for the journey that lies ahead. While the road may be filled with challenges and uncertainties, I'm confident that with dedication, creativity, and a dash of perseverance, we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way. Together, we'll continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, making meaningful contributions to the world around us one project at a time.

Each day, I'm reminded of the importance of staying grounded in gratitude and embracing the present moment. As I continue to navigate the ever-changing landscape of my role as the Communications and Graphics Fellow, I'm committed to approaching each day with an open heart, a curious mind, and a steadfast determination to make a difference.

Until next time!

Rebecca :)

Bridging Communities – 3 Months Into My Role as a Communications and Graphics Fellow

Hello, dear readers!

It's me Rebecca, and it's my pleasure to welcome you to my second blog post. It's been an incredible three months since I stepped into the role of Communications and Graphics Fellow, and I'm excited to share the highlights of my journey so far.

A significant portion of my recent efforts has been dedicated to the Hispanic and Latino Outreach Initiative, a project close to my heart. The aim is to bridge gaps and foster inclusivity within this vibrant community. The specific goal of the initiative is to provide crucial information to the Hispanic and Latino communities, empowering them to apply for support from the National Park Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (NPS RTCA) in their respective communities.

The NPS RTCA Latino Outreach Webinar has been a beacon of excitement in this initiative. The response from Hispanic and Latino organizations in the Midwest has been nothing short of inspiring. Thoughtful and enthusiastic emails have flooded my inbox, showcasing a genuine interest in understanding how NPS RTCA support can enhance and uplift their communities. It's heartening to witness the proactive engagement of these organizations in initiatives that celebrate the rich diversity within our community.

Networking has played a pivotal role in my professional growth during these three months. Connecting with Hispanic and Latino organizations and benefiting from the mentorship and guidance of successful projects, particularly in Texas, has provided me with invaluable insights. Understanding the challenges and opportunities within the Hispanic and Latino community has deepened my commitment to fostering unity and shared purpose.

Working remotely from Santa Barbara has been a source of tranquility. Taking leisurely walks under the warm blue skies has become a daily ritual, offering moments of solace and inspiration amidst nature's beauty. While I took this picture I thought of the metaphorical growth of tunas on nopales serving as a reminder that with support and nourishment, our communities can flourish and thrive.

As we transition from the holiday season, the anticipation for the NPS RTCA Latino Outreach Webinar continues to grow. The collaborative spirit and interest from Hispanic and Latino organizations in the Midwest underscore the importance of providing resources that empower communities to take part of their community's development.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of this journey. Your encouragement fuels my dedication to this meaningful work. Stay tuned for more updates as we collectively work towards building bridges and empowering communities. Until next time, keep smiling, stay positive, and embrace the beauty of every connection.

See you next time,

Rebecca Avina

First Blog Post

First Blog post!

As the new Communications and Graphics Fellow at the National Park Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance, I've had an incredibly warm welcome to the team. My first adventure took me to the stunning Channel Island National Park, where I had the chance to connect my technology to the national park server. Although I'll be working from home, this mini adventure was a great start. Speaking of which, my family back in Washington was so excited for my new job that they wanted a first-day-of-school type picture, which I took in front of the Channel Island National Park entrance. I also want to note even though I grew up in Ventura county, I’ve never had the chance to visit so it was a nice treat.

Since then, I've joined various team meetings and have been familiarizing myself with the NPS RTCA website, understanding the valuable resources it offers. In my role, I've been focusing on enhancing communication and graphic design elements, which has been a wonderful way to connect with my team and contribute to our shared goals.

Moreover, I have been delving into some research with our team writer, Jenny Herring, focusing on Latino outreach in the Midwest. This exploration has involved seeking out initiatives aimed at providing support and opportunities for Latino and Hispanic communities. The insights gained from our research have shed light on the impactful work that the RTCA has accomplished in supporting communities, particularly their initiatives with indigenous outreach.

As I continue to settle in, I've been learning more about the RTCA's initiatives, which are essentially efforts to preserve and protect natural areas and promote outdoor recreational activities for all to enjoy. I'm thrilled to be part of these vital endeavors that positively impact the environment and communities alike.

This opportunity also holds a special place in my life as a first-generation graduate student. As I embark on this journey, I aspire to grow and diversify my skill set, taking full advantage of the chance to professionally work in national park projects and support my Latino and Hispanic communities. I'm eager to expand my knowledge in communication and graphic design and contribute to projects that connect people with the beauty of nature and conservation.

Being a first-generation grad student adds a unique dynamic to my experience. It's not just about my personal and professional growth, but it's also about setting an example for future generations within my community. I hope to show that with dedication and the right opportunities, anyone can make a positive impact and contribute to meaningful initiatives like those of the NPS RTCA.

Despite the initial adjustment period, everyone has been wonderfully welcoming. Learning about Latino and Hispanic organizations in the Midwest and reaching out to them for potential collaborations within our RTCA initiatives has been an enlightening and rewarding journey. I've always been passionate about supporting my community, and now, with this role, I can contribute to providing access to recreational and conservation opportunities for all.

I’m excited to see what else this journey brings, and how it shapes my future both personally and professionally. Until next time!
