Bridging Communities – 3 Months Into My Role as a Communications and Graphics Fellow

Written by: Rebecca Aviña

Hello, dear readers!

It's me Rebecca, and it's my pleasure to welcome you to my second blog post. It's been an incredible three months since I stepped into the role of Communications and Graphics Fellow, and I'm excited to share the highlights of my journey so far.

A significant portion of my recent efforts has been dedicated to the Hispanic and Latino Outreach Initiative, a project close to my heart. The aim is to bridge gaps and foster inclusivity within this vibrant community. The specific goal of the initiative is to provide crucial information to the Hispanic and Latino communities, empowering them to apply for support from the National Park Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (NPS RTCA) in their respective communities.

The NPS RTCA Latino Outreach Webinar has been a beacon of excitement in this initiative. The response from Hispanic and Latino organizations in the Midwest has been nothing short of inspiring. Thoughtful and enthusiastic emails have flooded my inbox, showcasing a genuine interest in understanding how NPS RTCA support can enhance and uplift their communities. It's heartening to witness the proactive engagement of these organizations in initiatives that celebrate the rich diversity within our community.

Networking has played a pivotal role in my professional growth during these three months. Connecting with Hispanic and Latino organizations and benefiting from the mentorship and guidance of successful projects, particularly in Texas, has provided me with invaluable insights. Understanding the challenges and opportunities within the Hispanic and Latino community has deepened my commitment to fostering unity and shared purpose.

Working remotely from Santa Barbara has been a source of tranquility. Taking leisurely walks under the warm blue skies has become a daily ritual, offering moments of solace and inspiration amidst nature's beauty. While I took this picture I thought of the metaphorical growth of tunas on nopales serving as a reminder that with support and nourishment, our communities can flourish and thrive.

As we transition from the holiday season, the anticipation for the NPS RTCA Latino Outreach Webinar continues to grow. The collaborative spirit and interest from Hispanic and Latino organizations in the Midwest underscore the importance of providing resources that empower communities to take part of their community's development.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of this journey. Your encouragement fuels my dedication to this meaningful work. Stay tuned for more updates as we collectively work towards building bridges and empowering communities. Until next time, keep smiling, stay positive, and embrace the beauty of every connection.

See you next time,

Rebecca Avina
