Latino Faith Leaders: Basin & Range Monument Protects God’s Creation

Category: News Releases

Today, Por la Creación Faith-based Alliance celebrated the President’s protection of Basin and Range National Monument.

“In protecting Basin and Range National Monument, President Obama and Senator Reid have conserved God’s creation for this generation and the next,” said Por la Creación Faith-based Alliance member Juan Almanza, Centro de Adoración CAF, in Las Vegas. “It is our moral responsibility to safeguard our native plants, wildlife habitat and historical heritage, such as exist in the rugged landscape of Basin and Range. We are proud to have a new National Monument in Nevada.”

Basin and Range National Monument is located just two hours from Las Vegas. Protecting these public lands safeguards irreplaceable Native American petroglyphs and habitat for mule deer, pronghorn, elk, and the Greater Sage-grouse – the subject of extensive conservation efforts across 11 states, including Nevada. The new national monument also protects rare and sensitive plants, one of which, the summer-flowering White River catseye, can be found nowhere else on Earth.

The Por la Creación Faith-based Alliance's mission is to develop stewards of God’s creation by educating and engaging this generation to leave a legacy for the future. The group seeks to educate Hispanics and to encourage active engagement in supporting the nation’s public lands and protecting our natural resources.
