SIERRA CLUB: El Planeta Nos Pertenece a Todos / The Planet Belongs to Everyone

Category: News Coverage

English

Let's talk about changes. They happen every day around us, unnoticed: a flower that is born and withers, a colony of ants that decides to change places to function better, or a change in the wind. All very simple changes, but still ones that affect us in one way or another, even if we can't imagine how.

Now let's talk about the changes that can creep up on us over time. . These are things like coastal erosion;  the proliferation of major hurricanes, extreme droughts, and unseasonable weather; and the warming of our seas. While weather has always changed and storms always arrived, what is not normal is the speed, consistency and intensity with which those events are occurring.

Whenever we have the opportunity, we like to emphasize that  the planet belongs to all of us, and everything that happens to it affects us and should be a priority in our lives. In 2014, the Hispanic Access Foundation (HAF) took on the task of creating what is now known as the Latino Conservation Week. It’s a  way of motivating the Latino community to participate and enjoy outdoor activities so we can gain awareness about the importance of conserving our natural resources and protecting our environment. Eight years later,   the event continues to raise the alarm about climate change and its devastating effects on our communities.

There’s no doubt that Latinos have a strong connection  to the environment, which  arises in large part from the way we grew up. Many of us hail from places where the sea, mountains, rivers, and deserts were part of our daily lives. Some of us still live in such places. In addition, our ancestors were very close to the earth, both spiritually and as a  means  of survival.  But in modern times it cannot be denied that we have broken the link we had with the planet, which  is why the Latino Conservation Week is so important.

During this week everyone who cares about the environment can enjoy activities planned by non-profit, community, and faith groups and government agencies. The  events range from community meetings about adopting  healthy environmental practices, to camping trips in a national park. The purpose is not only to raise awareness of environmental issues but also to have a good time and be in good company. Attend any of the events taking place in your area and be part of the change. The work of protecting our planet is one that we at Sierra Club know Latinos take very seriously. We support the events held during this week and continue to work hand-in-hand with the Hispanic community to achieve our common goals.
