At Hispanic Access, we believe real change begins by showing up where our people are.

Not to present. Not to pitch. But to listen deeply, learn humbly, and walk alongside communities as they lead transformative work every day.

Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of traveling alongside our board, staff, partners, and network leaders to communities across Texas, Central Florida, Puerto Rico, and Las Vegas.

And everywhere we went, we were reminded of something powerful:

Communities already hold the wisdom, leadership, and vision they need. But our role is to walk alongside them and help create the conditions for that leadership to grow.

In the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, we joined families, faith leaders, and conservation advocates at the Yturria Brush Tract Wildlife Refuge.

We watched children experience nature in new ways while parents and grandparents shared stories rooted in culture, memory, and belonging.

We are learning that when trusted leaders open the door to stewardship, conservation becomes more than protecting land.

It becomes cultural reconnection. Healing. And a living classroom of belonging.

In Central Florida, we walked alongside faith leaders, educators, arborists, and youth, creating spaces where environmental stewardship, education, and community come together.

I saw young people discovering pathways into STEM and leadership while staying deeply connected to their identities and their families.

And we are learning that when faith communities and civic partners come together, leadership expands across generations because it is rooted in service, identity, and collective purpose.

In Puerto Rico, we stood with environmental advocates, students, pastors, and community leaders working to strengthen coastal resilience and prepare the next generation to lead.

One moment that deeply moved me was hearing a network leader describe our work as “lifting the hands of others.”

That is what accompaniment means to us.

And we are learning that true leadership development is not about teaching people what they lack. It is about removing barriers so their creativity, cultural wisdom, and love for community can flourish — and then watching them help others rise alongside them.

And in Las Vegas, we gathered with faith and community partners focused on financial mobility and wellness because we know thriving communities are built through connection, opportunity, and trust.

We are learning that economic mobility, environmental stewardship, health, and belonging are all connected — and when leaders weave them together through trusted relationships, entire communities rise.

Across every place we visited, people told us the same thing:

“You show up to listen. You show up to serve. And you follow through.”

That trust fuels our work.

At Hispanic Access, accompaniment is more than a value. It is how we build movements, strengthen communities, and create lasting change for future generations.
